Roulette was created by a French mathematician, Blaise Pascal in the 17th Century. It was a byproduct of his attempts to invent a perpetual motion machine. He also inadvertantly gave it its name; Roulette is French for 'Small Wheel'.
By the early 1800s, the game was enormously popular in France and in 1842, brothers Francois and Louis Blanc added the 0 to increase the house odds. Incidentally, Loius Blanc later went on to establish the first casino in Monte Carlo. When roulette arrived in the US, American casino owners decided to add one more number to the wheel which they refered to as double zero (00). This changed the game dramatically.
In Europe, the Casino's edge is 2.7 percent. However with the US introduction of double zero, the wheel favours the casino by 5.26 percent. However, there are now single zero wheels in some American casinos.
