BLACKJACK A GLOSSARY OF TERMS


BLACKJACK

The first two cards dealt to a box that total 21 consisting of an ACE coupled with a TEN or FACE CARD


BUST
A losing hand in blackjack with a total higher than TWENTY ONE


DEALER

The person shuffling the cards and paying or taking bets on behalf of the casino


DOUBLE DOWN
The opportunity to double your original wager in blackjack you will receive only one additional card


TOKES

To give a tip or place a bet for the dealer


SHUFFLE
When the dealer randomly mixes the cards before each round of play


SHOE

The box that the cards are dealt from in multi deck blackjack


HIT
To draw an additional card in blackjack


HOLE CARD

The dealers face down card in blackjack


UP CARD
The dealers exposed card in blackjack


EXPOSED CARD

A card shown to the players in error


INSURANCE
A bet not exceeding 50% of your original wager that pays 2-1 only offered when the dealers up card is an ACE


PUSH or TIE

When the dealer and player have the same hand total you don’t win or lose


FIRST BASE
The player seated in first position also first to act


LAST BASE

The player seated in last position and the final player to act also known as the ANCHOR


PITCH
The dealing method used to deliver cards to players in single deck blackjack


SPLIT

To separate two cards of equal value in order to make an additional hand


STAND
To inform the dealer that you require no additional cards by giving the correct hand signal


BURN CARD

The fist card removed from shoe and placed in the discard before play begins


DISCARD RACK
The rack to the right of the dealer the cards are placed in at the end of play


CARD CUTTER

A plastic card used by the players to cut the deck before play begins


SURRENDER
The option to lose 50% of your original wager rather than lose whole bet before any additional cards are drawn


CHIPS or CHECKS

The tokens used to place bets during the course of the game


RUN DOWN
When the dealer randomly checks the deck for 52 cards


PLAY BEHIND

To place a bet on the back of another players box only the player representing the original wager will make the final decision
